Why make a shift to thrift? There's plenty of really good reasons to choose preloved over fast fashion that go beyond supporting small business and saving money.
Clothes waste is a real environmental issue. By buying second hand, you're helping our planet.
According to the United Nations Environment Program:
Every year the fashion industry uses 93 billion cubic meters of water — enough to meet the consumption needs of five million people.
Around 20% of wastewater worldwide comes from fabric dyeing and treatment.
Of the total fiber input used for clothing, 87% is incinerated or disposed of in a landfill.
The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of annual global carbon emissions.
Yuck. By buying second hand, you're helping to slow these numbers down.

Giving BackEach month, Evergreen donates proceeds from sales to a local charity that
provides essential children, family, and/or caregiver support and services. Consignors are also welcome to donate their payouts. Through this initiative we have been able to make financial donations to Raising a Village, Reaching for Rainbows, Wellington Storehouse Foodbank, and more.
Consignors always have the choice to donate any clothing not consigned to Evergreen, which is then donated to local charities like Raising A Village Quinte, St. Vincent De Paul's, and Wellington Storehouse Foodbank.
An Ethical Choice
We’ve all seen the countries named on the ‘made in’ tags of clothing. The reason we see these countries is fairly well known: labour is cheaper, there are fewer (or no) regulations around working conditions, and age of employment is often overlooked.
How does buying preloved send a message to these companies to do better? As a consumer, choosing to support preloved or brands that don’t exploit garment workers shows the fashion industry what matters when it comes to your clothing choices; fair/ethical treatment of workers.
How does that work when you buy brand names from a preloved shop like Evergreen Kids Thrift? By shopping pre-loved, your dollars are not directly supporting the brand, but are supporting a small business owner You are showing your commitment not only to the sustainability preloved offers, but helping reduce the demand for fast fashion. You are rooting for a fairer world.
